To increase cooling output and
update old equipment, we replaced two 450-ton Carrier absorption
chillers and both BAC towers at Virtua West Jersey Hospital Voorhees.
Removing the
mechanical room extension wall was necessary for rigging the existing and new
chillers. We designed and sketched piping to fit the mechanical room.
The absorption chillers were
replaced with two larger capacity Carrier 550-ton centrifugal chillers.
While the chillers were
being replaced, we also had to install
a sump filtration system in each tower because
emergency helicopter activity causes an unusually high amount of dirt around the towers’ air intake.
We used ten-inch steel pipe to
replace the existing eight-inch piping between the towers, chillers and the
building’s air handlers.
Using New Jersey
sub-contractors for some of the work (including the excellent brick laying), we
were able to get the two chillers and new piping
installed, primed and ready for spring start up.
Once Carrier finishes with the warranty work
on the two chillers, we
will be responsible for the maintenance contract.
